Scent Detection involves teaching dogs to search for and alert on target odours. Scent detection is reactive dog friendly, and is fantastic low impact activity that is great mental exercise.

Please note that dog-dog interaction is never allowed at any of our Scent Detection events, so it’s always safe to play.

Only one dog at a time will be in the search area. Benching is in your car while waiting your turn. Please have your dog on a different collar/harness than you normally would for walking.

Scent detection - beginner

6 Week Program

Price: $250 + GST

Start Dates:

Tuesday , November 24th @ 8:00pm

Wednesday, November 25th @ 5:15pm

This program is 1 hour long and will run on the same day and time for 6 weeks.

In the beginner class, we train dogs to find a scent, applying the techniques that have already helped hundreds of teams around the world.  Scent detection is a game that your dog should love. We work with all dogs and focus on rewards instead of pressure, so dogs of every age can learn scent detection. Expect to have fun from the very first imprinting session!

In this class, you’ll learn how to:

  • Motivate your dog so he loves searching for target odor

  • Train your dog to search systematically

  • Improve forward focus

  • Develop and obedience to odor and commitment

  • Avoid the most common mistakes causing failures

  • Learn about scent detection and what you can do with it

  • Understand scent detection terminology, and help you to picture what your dog’s reliable end behavior should look like

  • Find the precise location of the source

  • Once your dog is ready, we’ll start fading the food, so your dog recognizes target odor

  • Teach your dog to work independently, at a distance

  • Start indication training (aka trained final response)

  • Harness natural drives and building motivation

By the end of this class, most dogs are eagerly searching for odor, confidently finding the source in our scent detection lab.

There are no prerequisites for this course. We start our puppies as young as 5 weeks, using motivation and games so every dog can succeed.

Note: Dogs may need to repeat levels several times to master skills before moving up to the next level. The 6 week completion of the course does not mean you automatically move to the next level. For consistency in your dogs skills and your handling, it is recommended to repeat levels until you are fully confident in the tasks. If you have questions about moving up a level please consult your instructor Carla Simon.

Scent detection - Intermediate

6 Week Program

Price: $250 + GST

Start Dates:

Wednesday, November 25th@ 6:30pm

This program is 1 hour long and will run on the same day and time for 6 weeks.

In this class, we’ll train your dog to perform a rock-solid indication even spectators will recognize. We’ll show you why you need a reliable indication and focus on developing a solid communication system between you and your sniffer dog.

Suitable for intermediate dogs who already find the source of target odor, troubleshooting or retraining dogs e.g. troubleshooting for dogs with aggressive/fringe/false alerts.

In the Intermediate class you’ll learn how to:

  • Train a rock-solid, precise indication to improve reliability

  • Understand how dogs learn and how best to teach them

  • Start learning the secrets of handling professional sniffer dogs

  • Proof off distractions

  • Minimize errors, before, during and after imprinting

  • Train so your dog only does the behaviors you want, and none of what you don’t

  • Avoid false alerts, missed hides and aggressive alerts

  • Fade the boxes and introduce interior hides

  • Ignore intentional food, toy, human, and other distractions

  • Use body language to set your dog up for success, without unintentionally telegraphing the location of the hides

  • Read your dog better

  • Help your dog, effectively, when he needs it

  • Increase search stamina

  • Prepare for testing your skills

  • Introduce blind searches

  • Troubleshoot any problems that you encounter so you get back on track quickly

  • Have more fun

By the end of this class, most dogs consistently and confidently indicate containers in lineups with moderate distractions.

Note: Dogs may need to repeat levels several times to master skills before moving up to the next level. The 6-week completion of the course does not mean you automatically move to the next level. For consistency in your dogs skills and your handling, it is recommended to repeat levels until you are fully confident in the tasks. If you have questions about moving up a level please consult your instructor Carla Simon.
