Scent Detection involves teaching dogs to search for and alert on target odours. Scent detection is reactive dog friendly, and is fantastic low impact activity that is great mental exercise.
Please note that dog-dog interaction is never allowed at any of our Scent Detection events, so it’s always safe to play.
Only one dog at a time will be in the search area.

FOUNDATION Scent detection

Foundation Scent Detection class introduces the concept of the game. This class will build on your dogs natural ability to hunt for toys or food rewards all while helping build confidence. In this class we will work on building foundation. Fearful dogs will also enjoy this class as dogs work individually so they will not meet or see one another.

The Intro to Scent Detection class introduces the concept of the game, builds handler observation skills and timing, and gets the dogs focused. This class advances the dog’s scent discrimination skills and are taught to identify a scent (target odour), a natural essential oil. Additionally, we introduce techniques and tactics for building better dog/handler teamwork.

The Advanced Scent Detection class is designed for the experienced teams and will expand both the handler's and the dog's understanding of the target odours and the concepts of nose work. This class is geared towards advanced handling and off-leash work. The teams will learn to navigate more intricate and challenging training scenarios and focus on containers, interiors and distractors.

INTRO TO CWAGS TRIALS

Pre-Requisites: dogs need to understand odour and have worked with distractors.
In this 6 week program, we will be going over the rules of each level of CWAGS scent detection and getting you prepared to trial. The odours we will be using are Birch, Anise, Cypress and Clove. You will be running in search areas outlined by CWAGS.
You and your dog will have an opportunity to practice in every level CWAGS has to offer. From Ranger where your dog works at a distance, to searching in an area with one to four hides, but the total of hides is unknown to the handlers. This is also a great time to polish the skills you and your dogs have learned and to gain more confidence in a trial setting.

intro to vehicles and exterior

Pre Requisites: scent detection advanced skills or have instructor permission to join.
This class will focus on introducing vehicles to your dog. They will be taught through fun games to search and stick to vehicles. You will also learn how to navigate exterior searches, which can be challenging to many dogs and people. Through skill building activities, we will build a strong foundation and confidence for successful outdoor searches.
Please note: dogs will be crated in owners car between runs.

SCENT CHALLENGES
6 week program

This class will be divided up into three different challenges. You and your dog will get a better understanding on how to create a search pattern with containers while not just using boxes. Aerial will teach your dog to find odour at different heights while suspended in the air. Lastly, your dogs will have a fun time working through more complex odour pictures within different interior rooms.
Dogs will either be crated in between turns or benched in your vehicle.
Pre-Requisites: Dogs must have a solid understanding of odour.
